Alphagan P Eye Drops Description

Alphagan P Eye Drops or generic Brimonidine Tartrate may be prescribed to help reduce the intraocular pressure as well as for slowing the progression of glaucoma. Alphagan P Eye Drops is the modified version of Alphagan Eye Drops with the “P” standing for Purite as the preservative instead of benzalkonium chloride. The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.

If you have a family history of glaucoma, are diabetic or hypertensive, or have severe near-sightedness, you should have your eyes tested every 1-2 years after the age of 35. Early detection is the key to taking care of your sight.

Reduce Ocular Pressure by Restricting the Inflow of Aqueous Humor

The pressure that builds up in your eye is caused when the fluid that enters your eyes does not drain out properly so the fluid will build-up and possibly damage your optic nerve if not diagnosed. To correct this, Alphagan P Eye Drops will work as an alpha agonist by stimulating the alpha receptors located on the blood vessels that supply the ciliary body, this is the structure that releases the aqueous humor in your eye.

The stimulation causes your blood vessels to narrow which restricts the amount of fluid that filters out from the blood vessels to form aqueous humor so the inflow of fluid is reduced and pressure will decrease. Your risk of glaucoma, or further damage from it, is also decreased.

Conditions Treated by Alphagan P Eye Drops

Ocular hypertension can go undetected until it causes glaucoma and you begin to notice your peripheral vision is impaired. This is why regular eye exams are so important, especially as you get older. An ophthalmologist can perform a test that measures the pressure in your eye so you know whether you have ocular hypertension or are at risk for glaucoma.

There are several types of glaucoma, and primary open-angle is the most common. It can take years to develop any loss of sight. Any sight you do lose is permanent, but Alphagan P Eye Drops can slow the progression of glaucoma and preserve the sight you have left.

Before Alphagan P Eye Drops are Prescribed

Ask your doctor about any risks with using Alphagan P Eye Drops if you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or are breast feeding. Report other medical conditions and allergies to your doctor and list any OTC or Rx drugs you currently take or use, including herbal and vitamin supplements so it can be determined if Alphagan P Eye Drops are safe for you to use.

Alphagan P Eye Drops Precautions

Your vision will be impaired temporarily after instilling Alphagan P Eye Drops so refrain from driving, operating machinery, or attempting any activity that may be unsafe until vision is restored.
