DEMADEX (TORSEMIDE)

Demadex Description

Demadex is referred to as a loop diuretic or water pill. The name refers to the loop of Henle which is found in the functional unit of your kidneys. If you are being treated for heart failure, your doctor may prescribe Demadex or generic Torsemide in order to decrease the fluid build-up in your body because your heart is unable to provide a sufficient blood flow to the rest of your tissues and organs properly. The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.

How Demadex Works as a Diuretic

Loop diuretics act on the transport of salt and water across cells found in the loop of Henle in your kidneys. This causes your kidneys to pass out more fluid resulting in less fluid in your bloodstream. The excess fluid that’s been collecting around your body and lung tissues is then drawn back into your bloodstream in order to replace the extra fluids being passed out by your kidneys as you urinate. You can breathe easier now because the fluid build-up, called edema, is reduced as is the strain on your heart. Demadex is not a cure for edema that can result from heart failure, kidney disease, or hypertension, but it can relieve your breathing problems so you’re able to carry out your daily routine.

Conditions Treated by Demadex

There are several medical conditions that can cause your body to retain fluids other than heart failure, hypertension, and kidney disease. Cirrhosis of the liver can cause edema of your lungs and fluid to accumulate in your abdominal cavity. Your liver is vital as it helps to detoxify harmful substances in your body, cleans your blood, and makes essential nutrients. If your liver becomes damaged, whether due to cystic fibrosis, poorly formed bile ducts, chronic alcohol abuse, hepatitis C or B or other reasons, your liver will try to heal itself. Every time it repairs an injury, scar tissue forms. If you are unaware, as many are, of the damage being done from scar tissue building up, your liver function becomes compromised. In advanced cirrhosis, your liver is struggling to do its job.

Before You Take Demadex

Ask your doctor about the safety of taking Demadex if you are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breast feeding. Discuss other medical conditions or allergies you have and list any over the counter medications and Rx drugs you are taking, including herbal and vitamin supplements. This will allow your doctor to decide if Demadex will be alright for you to take or if dosage adjustments may be required.

Demadex Precautions and Recommendations

You should not consume licorice or ginseng while taking Demadex. Licorice could decrease your potassium levels and ginseng may increase your risk of diuretic resistance. Until you know how your body will react to Demadex, you should not drive, operate machinery, or perform any tasks that may be considered risky. Stay out of the sun and tanning beds as Demadex may cause your skin to be more sensitive to UV rays. If you have diabetes, check your glucose levels more often as Demadex may affect your blood sugar.

Possible Side Effects of Demadex

  • Frequent urination
  • Heartburn or indigestion
  • Constipation
  • Headache

Demadex may cause you to become dehydrated so be aware of symptoms of excessive thirst, upset stomach, weakness, or ringing in your ears and see your doctor or pharmacist regarding the best way to combat this.
