Elidel Description

Atopic dermatitis, also known as eczema, can be difficult to treat sometimes and that is when you need a prescription for a non-steroidal topical cream called Elidel. This is an anti inflammatory medicine that can be applied to adults and children over the age of 2 years, with results seen in as early as a week or so.

Eczema appears as dry, itchy, skin patches that can become infected if you scratch the area and break the skin which allows bacteria to enter so it’s important that you seek treatment. This is not a contagious condition and there is no cure, but Elidel can provide relief by reducing the itching and redness.

How Elidel Can Decrease the Symptoms of Eczema

When an eczema flare-up is triggered, your immune response is misguided and believes that you are under attack so white blood cells are signaled to parts of your body to try and minimize any damage. As other chemicals produced in your body arrive, the area becomes red and inflamed.

Elidel contains Pimecrolimus, a chemical that is able to regulate one or more immune functions in your body. When applied as directed, Elidel is believed to work by slowing the production of a certain type of white blood cell (T cell) that plays a part in your eczema.

Conditions Treated by Elidel

Newer findings in regards to the cause of eczema have turned to structural defects in your epidermis that has an effect on the integrity of your skin barrier. An impaired skin barrier can be more porous, making it vulnerable to toxins and antigens. This can cause your immune response to be more exaggerated when you come into contact with anything that your immune system thinks is a threat. Soaps, perfume, metal, sweat, or even temperature changes can falsely sound the alarm that danger is about.

Eczema also seems to occur in those with other autoimmune diseases, such as celiac disease. And apparently, more than half of the children who have eczema will go on to develop asthma/allergies. Until more is known about autoimmune diseases, your doctor is the best connection for relief from the red, itchy rash-like condition.

Before Elidel is Prescribed

Ask your doctor if Elidel is safe to apply if you are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breast feeding. To determine if Elidel is the right medication for you, tell your doctor about other medical conditions and allergies you have and list any OTC or Rx drugs you take, including herbal remedies and dietary or vitamin supplements.

Elidel Precautions

Elidel is for short-term use only for eczema and must be stopped once the symptoms have cleared up. Your immune system is suppressed while using Elidel which increases your risk of other infections. Avoid direct sunlight, tanning beds, or sun lamps as Elidel can make your skin more sensitive and you may burn. Revisit your doctor if there is no improvement after applying Elidel as instructed for six weeks.
