HYTRIN (TERAZOSIN)

A Brief Description of Hytrin

Hytrin or generic Terazosin may be prescribed for those with high blood pressure (hypertension) in order to avoid other possible health risks that could result if left untreated. There are no symptoms that will alert you to the damage that can be taking place in your blood vessels from the force of the blood flow. Your heart can become overworked and overwhelmed and you are completely unaware that you are a candidate for a heart attack or stroke. The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.

How Hytrin Works in Your Body

Hytrin belongs to a group of drugs called alpha-adrenergic blockers. Hytrin blocks alpha receptors in certain areas of the body and relaxes your veins and arteries so that blood can more easily pass through them. Because of this, Hytrin is prescribed for two quite different uses; the first is hypertension and the second is called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

Alpha receptors are also found in the muscle in the walls of blood vessels. By blocking these receptors, Hytrin causes the muscle to relax and allows the blood vessels to widen. This lets the blood pass more easily through the blood vessels and hence reduces blood pressure.

Hytrin works its alpha-adrenergic blocking capabilities on the majority of your blood vessels which helps to relax muscles and allow your blood flow to improve as well as relaxing bladder muscles for men with an enlarged prostate.

Conditions That Benefit From Hytrin

Alpha receptors are found on the muscle in the prostate gland which lies at the top of the tube connecting the bladder to the outside (urethra). The prostate gland often enlarges with advancing age and presses on the urethra. This can cause symptoms such as difficulty passing urine. Hytrin blocks the alpha receptors in the prostate gland which causes the muscle in the prostate to relax. This allows urine to flow freely past the prostate and relieves the urinary symptoms of this condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

Before You Take Hytrin

Hytrin may not be right for men with a history of prostate cancer, so you should inform your doctor if you have ever been diagnosed with this disease. Also, you will need to be careful about undergoing cataract surgery while taking Hytrin; if you require cataract surgery, make sure to inform your surgeon that you are in treatment with Hytrin.

Precautions for Hytrin

Do not perform any activities that require you to be fully alert until you know how Hytrin will affect you, as the drug may cause dizziness and fainting.

Hytrin does not react well when combined with certain drugs, especially drugs for erectile dysfunction. Ask your doctor before starting these or any other medications. Medical attention should be sought immediately if edema in hands, ankles, and feet, fast or pounding heartbeat or feeling faint occurs.
