JANUMET (SITAGLIPTIN/METFORMIN)

Janumet Description

Janumet is prescribed to treat type 2 diabetes only, as the body is still able to produce some insulin which is required in order for this drug to work. Janumet contains two active ingredients to maintain a safe and proper blood glucose level. Sitagliptin works by inhibiting an enzyme called dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DDP-4) that normally breaks down two incretin hormones that are essential for raising insulin secretion when needed, such as after a meal. Metformin works in the body several ways; it helps type 2 diabetics respond to their own insulin better as well as lowers the amount of sugar the liver creates, and decreases the amount of sugar absorbed by the intestines.

Together with exercise and healthy eating, you can maintain a safe blood glucose level taking Janumet or generic Sitagliptin/Metformin as directed. The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.

Conditions Treated by Janumet

Type 2 diabetes occurs when your pancreas is unable to produce enough insulin to steady your blood glucose level or your body is not responding how it should to the insulin that is produced. Insulin is a hormone that helps your body manage blood sugar by carrying the sugar circulating in your bloodstream into cells so it can be used as energy later. If you are not producing sufficient amounts of insulin, the sugar remains in your bloodstream and causes high blood glucose levels and your body now has to use muscle and fat as an energy source. Get active, eat healthier, quit smoking, cut back on your alcohol consumption and you may be able to control your type 2 diabetes before it controls you.

Warnings for Janumet

If you are pregnant, your physician may decide that the benefits outweigh any risks that Janumet can pose in order to control your blood sugar. Tell your doctor if you may become pregnant or are breast-feeding before starting Janumet so it can be decided whether to change treatment plans.
