Even though there is no cure for epilepsy, there are medications that can help control your seizures so you can be more independent and enjoy an improved quality of life. Keppra XR or generic Levetiracetam XR is an extended-release antiepileptic drug that only requires you to take it once a day. Keppra XR treats tonic-clonic seizures in adults and children at least 6 years old and up, and myoclonic seizures in adults and children aged 12 and older. The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.
When taken as directed, Keppra XR apparently has a different spectrum of action that involves a particular protein in your brain known as SV2A. As Levetiracetam joins with this protein, there is a reduction in the release of certain neurotransmitters in your brain, most likely GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). Neurotransmitters are brain chemicals that send out signals between the neurons and are responsible for many functions in your body. It is not entirely clear to researchers exactly how Keppra XR is involved in preventing or controlling seizures, but it is effective and is usually taken with other antiepileptic drugs.
Keppra XR can be taken to control several types of seizures, including simple partial and complex partial seizures. Simple partial seizures may involve being completely aware of what is happening but you are not able to speak or move, while others came talk to others quite normally. Some call this type of seizure a focal onset seizure.
Complex partial seizures are also known as a focal onset impaired awareness seizure. This type affects only one part of your brain and only last a minute or so. During that time, you may not be able to talk or have control of your movements. These types of seizures are the most common among people with a brain injury or that have had a stroke.
Ask your doctor about any risks of taking Keppra XR while you are pregnant, planning on becoming pregnant, or are breast feeding. Explain other medical conditions or allergies you have to your doctor and list all OTC and Rx drugs you currently take or use, including herbal remedies and vitamin supplements. Your doctor can then determine if Keppra XR will be safe and beneficial to you as part of your seizure treatment.
Until you know how Keppra XR will affect you, do not operate machinery or attempt any task that may be considered unsafe if you are not alert. Store Keppra XR and other meds out of children’s reach and never share with others. If you or a family member notice a change in your moods or behavior, see your doctor at once.
