Periactin Description

Periactin is a sedating antihistamine due to significant quantities entering your brain that results in drowsiness. From two year olds to adults, Periactin or generic Cyproheptadine may be prescribed to treat allergy symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, and itching as well as reducing symptoms of bug bites and rashes. The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.

Your body’s immune response to stings, bites, and allergens is to protect you from the threat of possible harm. Histamine and other substances come to the rescue by increasing fluids in small capillaries and increases blood flow to the area at risk. You sneeze, your nose runs, and your eyes are red and water as a way to ‘flush out’ the intruder.

Cyproheptadine Will Help Take Care of Allergy Symptoms

When taken or administered as directed, Periactin blocks histamine receptors in your body. This action does not stop the release of histamine from mast cells, but it will not allow it to bind to its receptors so there is a decrease in histamine in your body. This reduces allergy symptoms so you can function without red, watery eyes and an itchy runny nose. Periactin also soothes the itch, swelling, and redness of a bug bite, sting, or rash.

Conditions Treated by Periactin

Normally, your immune system will adjust to your surroundings and environment. If you happen to come into contact with something benign, your immune system should recognize it as non-threatening. In some individuals, the immune system has become overactive or more sensitive than it should be and it alerts your immune response to pollen, pet dander, dust, or a host of other harmless things that pose no threat. Allergic symptoms will depend on whether you have inhaled or touched an allergen.

Before Periactin is Prescribed to You

Ask your doctor if Periactin poses any health risks while you are pregnant, planning on becoming pregnant, or are breast feeding. Explain other medical conditions or allergies to your doctor and list any OTC or Rx medications you take or use, including herbal remedies and dietary or vitamin supplements to determine if Periactin is safe for you to take.

Periactin Precautions

Until you know how your body will react to Periactin, do not operate a vehicle, machinery, or attempt any task that could be considered unsafe if you are dizzy or sleepy. You should not consume any alcohol while taking Periactin as it could intensify the effects of the drug. If you are administering Periactin to a child, be aware that they may be tired or lightheaded and could easily fall and injure themselves.
