AGRYLIN (ANAGRELIDE HCL)

What is Agrylin Prescribed for?

Agrylin or generic Anagrelide HCl is a platelet-reducing agent that is prescribed for managing a condition called thrombocythemia, which involves your body producing too many platelets. These platelets are cells in your blood that will help to form a blood clot when you are injured so bleeding will stop. The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.

How Does Agrylin Help?

Myeloproliferative disorders, shortened to MPD, is a collective name for conditions that cause blood cells, namely platelets, white blood cells and red blood cells, to increase their production in your bone marrow. Taking Agrylin slows the production of platelets in your body which are cells that help your blood clot. Without medication, it can be difficult for your blood to flow as it should and can cause a bleeding or clotting problem.

Conditions Treated by Agrylin

Polycythemia vera (PV) occurs when your bone marrow makes an overabundance of blood cells, red blood cells specifically. The vast majority of those with PV carry a mutation of the Janus Kinase 2 gene that results in uncontrolled cell growth and division within your bone marrow.

Essential thrombocytosis occurs when your body over-produces platelet cells; these are required for clotting. With the increased ability to clot, there is a risk of blood vessel blockage that could lead to heart attack or stroke depending on the area of the blockage.

Primary or idiopathic myelofibrosis happens when your bone marrow produces too much collagen or fibrous tissue that can impede the marrow’s capacity for producing blood cells. It is believed that genetics and environmental factors can result in MPDs.

Before You Take Agrylin

Ask your doctor about any risks of taking Agrylin while you are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breast feeding. List all current OTC and Rx medications you are on and including any herbal remedies and vitamin or dietary supplements. Advise your doctor of other medical conditions or allergies you are being treated for because combining some drugs can produce unwanted side effects or change how Agrylin works in your body.

Precautions for Agrylin

Until you know how Agrylin will affect you, do not attempt to drive, operate machinery, or perform any tasks that might be considered unsafe. Do not start any new meds or stop taking currents meds while on Agrylin without talking to your doctor as this could increase your risk of side effects. Keep all medications out of children’s reach and never share them with anyone else.
