ALDARA CREAM (IMIQUIMOD)

Aldara Cream Description

Aldara Cream or generic Imiquimod is an immune response modifier medicine prescribed for treating adults with actinic keratosis (AK) on the face or balding scalp that usually appears as a rough patch of skin. AK lesions usually form as a result of over exposure to the sun and if left untreated, could possibly become cancerous. The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.

How Aldara Cream Works on AK

When applied as directed, Aldara Cream or generic Imiquimod is absorbed into your skin cells and stimulates your immune system to produce interferon to destroy the cancerous and pre-cancerous cells. New AK lesions may appear during treatment but should clear with Aldara Cream or generic Imiquimod. Actinic keratosis is considered a chronic skin condition; it can be controlled with the use of Aldara Cream, but not cured.

Conditions Treated by Aldara Cream

If you are dealing with genital warts and are hesitant about having them frozen, lasered, excised, or cauterized by your doctor, ask for a prescription for Aldara Cream. You can apply Aldara Cream near your genitals, anus, and other affected areas in the privacy of your own home. Follow directions closely as Aldara Cream is not to be applied inside the vagina or anus because the skin may be too sensitive and could cause burning or irritation.

Genital warts are transmitted through skin to skin contact from people with the human papillomavirus (HPV). There is no cure for HPV, but there is a vaccination available to young people to prevent contracting the virus.

Before You Use Aldara Cream

Tell your doctor about other medical conditions or allergies you have and any OTC or Rx drugs you are taking, including homeopathic remedies and vitamin supplements so it can be decided if Aldara Cream or Imiquimod generic is right for your situation. Ask your doctor if Aldara Cream is safe to apply if you are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breast feeding.

Proper Use of Aldara Cream

Prolonged use or over-applying Aldara Cream can cause possible skin irritations. You should always wear protective headwear and use a suitable sunscreen for your skin type. This can be applied after Aldara Cream has been completely absorbed.
