ALOCRIL (NEDOCROMIL)

Alocril Description

Alocril is a short-term treatment for seasonal allergic conjunctivitis that can typically occur from May to September when your eyes are affected by the grass or ragweed pollen that is floating around. Your body’s immune response to allergens causes the tissue lining your eyeballs and inside of your eyelids to become inflamed, swollen, and very itchy. You should start using Alocril before the allergy season begins so your symptoms are not as intense. Although allergic conjunctivitis may be called pink eye, this type is not contagious.

Enjoy Relief from Allergic Conjunctivitis

The active ingredient in Alocril is called Nedocromil and it works as a mast cell stabilizer to help prevent red, painful, itchy eyes. Once instilled in one or both of your eyes, Alocril will inhibit mast cell degranulation which occurs when an allergen is detected. By interfering with this action, there are less inflammatory chemicals released, including histamine and prostaglandins, so you are able to find relief from allergic symptoms.

Conditions Treated by Alocril

Seasonal allergic conjunctivitis is also known as hay fever which came about some years ago from the allergic reaction some people experienced during the haying season. This is a little misleading because although a hay allergy is possible, it is usually ragweed, grass, and tree pollen that causes the runny nose, itchy eyes, and swollen eyelids.

The symptoms of allergies occur because your immune system has detected a threat, such as pollen, pet dander, or mold. To protect you, certain chemicals are produced and sent to confine and destroy or flush out the threat. You nose runs, eyes water, and you sneeze as a way to rid yourself of any danger. The over-activity of your immune response does not understand that pollen is not a threat so it will do what it feels is necessary to send the offender on its way.

Before You Receive an Alocril Rx

Ask your doctor if Alocril poses any risks if you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or are breast feeding. Discuss other medical conditions or allergies with your doctor and list any OTC or Rx drugs you currently take or use, including herbal remedies and vitamin or dietary supplements to determine if Alocril is the right medication for you.

Safe Use of Alocril as Prescribed

Your vision will be temporarily impaired after instilling Alocril, so do not drive, operate machinery, or attempt any task that requires you to see well. Remove contacts before using Alocril and do not reinsert them for at least 15 minutes afterward. Alocril is not to be administered to children under the age of 3 years. Store all medications safely out of children’s reach and never share your meds with others.
