ALOMIDE OPHTHALMIC SOLUTION (LODOXAMIDE)

Alomide Ophthalmic Solution Description

Alomide Ophthalmic Solution is a mast cell stabilizer your doctor may prescribe if you are experiencing keratitis, conjunctivitis, or a combination of both (keratoconjunctivitis) and it has been established that your eye condition is not caused by fungi, bacteria, or a virus.

Inflammation of your cornea (keratitis) or inflammation of the mucous lining of the front of your eye and lining inside your eyelids (conjunctiva) can cause redness, itching, and a dry, gritty feeling that makes it painful.

How Alomide Works

Mast cells play an important role as part of your immune system as they become sensitized when exposed to allergens, including pet dander, pollen, or dust mites. The mast cells then release substances, such as histamine and leukotrienes, which causes inflammation as part of your immune response to a foreign intruder. This can cause your eyes to water, redden, and become itchy.

When instilled as directed, the active ingredient of Alomide Ophthalmic Solution known as Lodoxamide works to stabilize the mast cells by preventing the transport of calcium into the mast cells. Without calcium present, histamine will not be released. This reduces the inflammation and other ocular symptoms that exposure to allergens can cause.

Conditions Treated by Alomide Ophthalmic Solution

Seasonal allergic conjunctivitis will usually affect both eyes, causing them to burn, itch, and water. Besides using medications, such as Alomide Ophthalmic Solution, you may be able to avoid the effects of pollen and other outdoor allergens by keeping windows and doors closed during peak pollen times.

Keratitis involves your cornea and can be caused by dry eyes, an injury, or an underlying medical condition. The use of contact lenses is a major risk factor for developing keratitis if proper hygiene is not followed for their care and cleaning before and after wearing them.

Before Alomide Ophthalmic Solution is Prescribed

Check with your doctor about any risks before using Alomide Ophthalmic Solution if you are pregnant or breast feeding. Discuss other medical conditions or allergies with your doctor and list any OTC and Rx drugs you currently use or take, including herbal remedies and dietary or vitamin supplements to determine if Alomide Ophthalmic Solution is the best medication for you.

Alomide Ophthalmic Solution Proper Use

Do not drive, operate machinery, or perform any task that requires clear vision as it will be temporarily impaired after instilling Alomide Ophthalmic Solution. All medications should be safely stored out of children’s reach and never share your medications with anyone else, even if they have the same symptoms. Remove any contact lenses before using Alomide Ophthalmic Solution and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.
