Anoro Ellipta is a long-acting bronchodilator prescribed as a maintenance treatment for those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD. Inhaling this medicine allows it to act directly in the lungs where it is needed most. It also reduces the potential for side effects in other parts of the body, as the amount absorbed into the blood through the lungs is lower than taking pills that have to get through your system first before they can act.
The active ingredients in Anoro Ellipta are Umeclidinium and Vilanterol. Umeclidinium is a long-acting muscarinic antagonist or LAMA that relaxes the airways in your lungs and Vilanterol is a long-acting beta antagonist or LABA that will help to dilate the muscles around your airways. Together, these actions relieve the bronchospasms and allow you to breathe more effortlessly.
COPD includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema which are progressive lung diseases that can restrict your airflow greatly affecting your ability to breathe. In chronic bronchitis, your airways become swollen and can be filled with mucus, which can make it difficult for you to breathe. In emphysema, the air sacs in your lungs are damaged which can make it hard for you to breathe in or exhale fully.
Approximately 80-90% of COPD cases are caused by smoking. Other causes include: genetics, second-hand smoke, occupational dusts or chemicals, and lung infections as a child. COPD is the fourth leading cause of death worldwide. Although there is no cure for COPD, treatment can help reduce symptoms, prevent flare-ups, and make it easier to carry out daily activities.
Make sure your physician is aware of your medical history and list any current medicine you are taking, including herbal remedies and vitamin supplements. There may be certain drugs you take that could cause unwanted side effects when taken along with Anoro Ellipta. Discuss food and drug allergies you have to avoid a negative reaction while using Anoro Ellipta.
Anoro Ellipta is for use only in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and should not be used to treat asthma. Anoro Ellipta will not work fast enough to treat a sudden bronchospasm attack so always have a rescue inhaler with you for fast acting relief. Keep all medication out of children’s reach and never share any meds with anyone else.
Tell your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects, including: tremors, nervousness, difficult or painful urination, muscle cramps or weakness, increased thirst/urination.
