What is Asacol (Mesalamine Enteric Coated)?

Asacol is an oral medication that may be prescribed to treat mild to moderate ulcerative colitis, a chronic disease of the large intestine that causes inflammation and ulcers in the digestive tract.

The active ingredient in Asacol is an anti-inflammatory medication called Mesalamine, also known as 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA). Mesalamine is an anti-inflammatory agent that stops the body from producing an inflammatory chemical in the intestines called prostaglandin.

What is Asacol used for?

Asacol and Mesalamine are used to treat the inflammatory bowel disease known as ulcerative colitis. These medications help reduce symptoms of ulcerative colitis including stomach pain, diarrhea, and blood in the stool.
