Axert belongs to the triptan group of drugs that is commonly prescribed to adults for the acute treatment of migraines with or without aura and for adolescents aged twelve to seventeen years of age with a history of migraines with or without aura that last four or more hours if left untreated.
A migraine is an intense, throbbing, headache that typically occurs on one side. Along with the pain of the headache, other symptoms often include nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. Migraine headaches can be incapacitating and as many as 28 million Americans experience migraine headache attacks. Learn what your migraine “triggers” are to help minimize their occurrences. These can include certain foods/drinks, food additives, hormone medications, stress, and even a change in weather.
Axert works by binding to serotonin receptors in your brain to cause your blood vessels to tighten in order to stop certain nerves from sending pain messages to your brain. With a more controlled blood flow, your migraine will ease off so you can continue on with your day.
Almotriptan Maleate, the active ingredient of Axert, is not effective at preventing a migraine from happening, but should be taken to stop one that has already begun. If you have migraines with aura, then you will have an indication that you are about to have an attack and can be prepared to take Axert as recommended by your doctor. Axert will not prevent or treat cluster headaches.
A migraine without aura is the most common of these neurological occurrences, which means there is little, if any, indication that one is about to start. Wavy or zigzagging lines of light, blurred vision and auditory hallucinations can all indicate a migraine with aura is going to occur. By taking Axert at the first sign of an attack, you can limit the severity and endurance of your migraine.
Ask your doctor if Axert is safe to take if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or are breast feeding. List all current over the counter and Rx medications you are taking, including herbal remedies and dietary or vitamin supplements to be certain Axert is the right drug for you. Combining drugs can cause an unwanted side effect or change how Axert will work for you.
Axert can make you dizzy or drowsy. You should not drive or perform any tasks that require you to be mentally alert until you know how Axert affects you. Advise your doctor if you have a history of coronary artery disease or other heart problems, blood vessel disease, or high blood pressure before you take Axert. Keep Axert out of children’s reach and do not share any meds with others.
