AYGESTIN (NORETHINDRONE ACETATE)

Aygestin Description

For those women that are experiencing secondary amenorrhea, which is the absence of your menstrual cycle not due to a pregnancy, menopause, or contraceptive pills to suppress your cycle, you can talk to your doctor about a prescription for Aygestin or generic Norethindrone Acetate. This is a synthetic form of the progestin hormone that may be able to balance your hormone levels. The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.

Aygestin is also prescribed for treating women with endometriosis. This can occur if the endometrial tissue has started to grow outside of the uterus and can cause fertility problems as well as pain, cramping, and abnormal periods.

How Aygestin Works

When taken as directed, Aygestin inhibits your immune response to the tissue growing where it should not and reduce inflammation, inhibit ovulation, and decrease blood vessel growth to discontinue the oxygen and nutrient supply going to the misplaced endometrial tissue. The actions of Aygestin relieve your symptoms and help to sustain a healthy uterine lining in your uterus where it belongs and to stabilize progestin levels to match estrogen hormone levels to help return your cycle as it should be.

Conditions Treated by Aygestin

When you are finished your cycle and your body knows you are not pregnant, it will shed the endometrium as you menstruate. For reasons not quite understood, this tissue may begin to grow on other organs in your pelvis. Usually it involves your ovaries, the fallopian tubes, or may line your pelvis. This growth of uterine lining will act as it should during each menstrual cycle as it thickens, then sheds with each period you have. However, this cast-off tissue has nowhere to exit and can become irritated and inflamed which causes the painful symptoms to develop.

Before Aygestin is Prescribed to You

Make certain you are not pregnant or breast feeding before taking Aygestin as it may harm your unborn or nursing baby. Explain other OTC and Rx drugs you currently take or use to your doctor including herbal remedies and supplements. Tell your doctor about any medical conditions or allergies you have that may interfere with the effects of Aygestin. This information will help your doctor to determine if Aygestin is the right medication for you.

Precautions and Proper Use of Aygestin

Taking Aygestin may increase your risk of blood clots, especially if you are obese, smoke, or you or a family member has previously had clots. Do not share this or any medication with others and keep out of children’s reach. It may take a few weeks before you benefit from the effects of Aygestin, so be patient.
