CATAPRES (CLONIDINE)

What is Catapres Prescribed for?

Hypertension is usually diagnosed when your blood pressure is consistently measured at 140-159/90-99 or higher (expressed as 140 over 90). 160 over 100 is considered stage 2 hypertension. You are not likely to notice any symptoms of hypertension, which is why it is important to have your blood pressure checked during your annual exam, especially if: there is hypertension in your family; you are experiencing stress from work or problems at home; you are obese; you are inactive or a senior.

Catapres or Clonidine generic is a centrally-acting anti-adrenergic agent that may be prescribed to lower your blood pressure, along with a change to your lifestyle that includes a healthier diet, exercise, not smoking, and limiting your alcohol consumption. When taken as directed, Catapres inhibits the release of certain neurotransmitters (epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine) called catecholamines and their activity as a response to stress. Catapres also stops signals from your brain to your nervous system so proper blood flow is restored and your heart does not have to work so hard.

How Do You Read Blood Pressure Numbers?

The first number you read is the higher one; this is the systolic reading that measures the blood pressure in your arteries as your heart contracts to push blood out of its chambers. The second number is the diastolic pressure as heart relaxes in between the beats, so the number is lower. Normal blood pressure is approximately 120/80 or under and read as 120 over 80. High normal blood pressure range is 130/80 – 89 and should be monitored. Hypertension (stage 1) is 140 – 159/ 90 – 99 with stage 2 at 160/100. Readings fluctuate throughout the day; you should keep a record of your blood pressure readings that is taken at the same times every day.

Before You Take Catapres

Ask your doctor if Catapres is safe to take while you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or are breast feeding. Discuss other medical conditions and allergies you have with your doctor and list all Rx and OTC drugs you currently take, including herbal remedies and dietary or vitamin supplements. This information will help your doctor determine the appropriate Catapres dosage for you

Precautions You Should Take with Catapres

Do not start, stop, or alter the dose of any meds you are on while taking Catapres without talking to your doctor as this could increase your risk of side effects. Keep Catapres out of children’s reach and never share any medications with others. Catapres or Clonidine generic may cause drowsiness.
