Condylox, also called Condyline in Canada, is a topical solution prescribed to treat external genital warts caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). The human papillomavirus can cause more than 100 different infections and many of them are symptom-free. However, skin to skin sexual contact can result in genital warts that can grow inside and outside the vagina, rectum, and penis. It is important to have your doctor examine the genital area and obtain histopathologic confirmation that the warts are a result of HPV and not a type of cancer.
The active ingredients in Condylox stop the growth of the abnormal cells that form the warts. This is not a cure for HPV or the genital warts it can cause, but it can help to eliminate the warts you have at the moment. They may regrow at a later time or new ones can form.
Your treatment regimen consists of carefully applying Condylox or Podofilox generic with a cotton swab to the genital or venereal warts every 12 hours for 3 days. A clean swab should always be used for each lesion. If any of this strong vesicant touches unaffected areas, the skin will burn so be careful if you decide to apply Condylox yourself. Then treatment is stopped for 4 days but may be repeated up to 3 more times. The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.
HPV is highly contagious and even with the use of a condom, there is still the risk of becoming infected from the surrounding skin during vaginal and anal sex. Many HPV infections will disappear in 8-13 months, but some do not and can hide in your body for years. When you develop genital warts or possibly cervical cancer, the HPV virus may have been triggered and is reactivated.
Parents of young pre-teen and teen girls and boys aged 11- 14 years should consult a doctor about a vaccine available to prevent the human papillomavirus before they have become sexually active. Teens and young adults from 15-26 years old can still undergo the vaccination that will involve a series of 3 shots.
Ask your doctor about any risks of using Condylox while you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or are breast feeding. To determine if Condylox is safe for you to use, tell your doctor about other medical conditions or allergies you have and list any OTC or Rx drugs you currently take or use, including herbal remedies and dietary or vitamin supplements.
Follow the directions given by your doctor closely to avoid passing the virus on to others or spreading your own infections further. Wash your hands before and after using Condylox and always use a clean swab for each wart you are treating. If Condylox spreads to other unaffected skin, wash immediately to avoid burning or blistering of healthy skin. Store all medications out of children’s reach and never share this or any medicine with others, even if they have the same symptoms.
