COREG (CARVEDILOL)

About Coreg

Coreg is an alpha beta blocker (a subclass of beta blockers) that is prescribed to treat hypertension and congestive heart failure and may be prescribed following a heart attack to improve the odds of a patients’ survival. Beta blockers are drugs that change the way your body responds to the hormone epinephrine (adrenaline) that is normally released into your bloodstream when you exert strong emotions, such as fear or anger which causes an increase in your heart rate, muscle strength, blood pressure, and sugar metabolism.

How Coreg Works

Coreg blocks much of the effects of epinephrine so your heartbeats are reduced, as is the force of each beat. This lowers your blood pressure and improves cardiac function. Coreg or generic Carvedilol is not a cure for hypertension or congestive heart failure, but it can help your heart to function more efficiently and allow those with congestive heart failure to slow the diseases’ progression and tolerate some physical activity. The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.

Conditions Treated by Coreg

As there are few symptoms to indicate you have high blood pressure, this condition can sneak up on you undetected and possibly result in a heart attack, stroke, or kidney disease. Regular doctor visits are the best way to diagnose and treat hypertension. Making lifestyle changes that include a healthier diet, exercise, and quitting nicotine is a great start.

Congestive heart failure is most commonly caused by the narrowing of your coronary arteries, which interferes with a steady blood supply to your heart muscle. Hypertension, heart attack, heart valve defects, and drugs can lead to congestive heart failure.

Before You Take Coreg

It is unknown whether Coreg is safe for an unborn or nursing baby so tell your doctor if you are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breastfeeding. Certain health conditions may interfere with you being able to take Coreg so discuss your medical history with your doctor to determine if this drug is safe for you. List any Rx medications and OTC products you are taking, including vitamin supplements and herbal preparations as these may change how Coreg works in your body.

Proper Use of Coreg

If you are being treated for high blood pressure, keep using Coreg even if you feel well. You may need to use blood pressure medication for the rest of your life. You may experience a drop in your blood pressure that can cause you to feel fatigued, dizzy, faint, or have blurry vision when taking Coreg. Talk to your doctor to see if your dose needs an adjustment.

Possible Side Effects of Coreg

  • Dizziness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Weight gain
  • Diarrhea

If you experience shortness of breath, swollen ankles or feet, or sudden weight gain, notify your doctor right away or seek other medical attention.
