CYKLOKAPRON (TRANEXAMIC ACID)

What is Cyklokapron?

Cyklokapron or generic Tranexamic Acid is an anti-fibrinolytic medication your doctor may prescribe if you are scheduled for a minor surgical procedure but you have a history of bleeding problems due to insufficient clotting factors, such as being a hemophiliac or another medical reason. The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.

When most people sustain a cut, have a tooth extracted, or you have a nosebleed, platelets and proteins in your plasma work together to stop the bleeding and form a blood clot. These clots are then broken down and recycled; this is called fibrinolysis. However, if you are a hemophiliac, fibrinolysis can take place too fast and the clot is broken down before it has stopped the bleeding.

How Cyklokapron Works in Your Body

Taking Cyklokapron as directed before, during, and/or after the procedure is performed will stop fibrinolysis from breaking the clot down too quickly and allow more time for bleeding to stop. To do this, the active ingredient called Tranexamic Acid goes to work by binding to amino acid receptor sites located on the enzymes present in your blood that are responsible for degrading fibrin clots. This will block the action of clots being broken down so those with bleeding problem will have more time to clot.

Conditions Treated by Cyklokapron

Many women are plagued by heavy bleeding during their menstrual cycle, medically known as menorrhagia. Cyklokapron or generic Tranexamic Acid may be prescribed to take during this time in order to reduce your blood loss. Your doctor or gynecologist will perform an examination and tests to see inside your cervix, determine how menorrhagia affects your lifestyle, and thoroughly go over your health and medical history with knowledge of other medications you are taking. If it’s decided that oral medication can help you, you may receive a prescription to buy Cyklokapron.

Before You Take Cyklokapron

Certain medical conditions may prevent you from taking Cyklokapron safely so you should discuss your health history with your doctor and list all Rx drugs and OTC medicine you are taking, including homeopathic remedies and dietary or vitamin supplements. Combining Cyklokapron with other meds could cause unintended side effects or change how it works in your body. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breast-feeding to see if Cyklokapron is safe to take during this time.

Important to Know About Cyklokapron

Women who are taking Cyklokapron should avoid using hormonal birth control such as birth control pills, injections, implants, vaginal rings, or skin patches. These can increase your risk of a blood clot, heart attack or stroke. Until you know how Cyklokapron will affect you, do not drive or participate in any activities that require you to be alert and have steady control of your body.
