DILANTIN INFATABS (PHENYTOIN)

Description of Dilantin Infatabs

As a treatment for adults and children 6 years and older that are experiencing grand mal or complex partial seizures, talk to your doctor about Dilantin Infatabs. These are easy to chew for those that have trouble swallowing pills or capsules. As an anticonvulsant, you may also be advised to take Dilantin Infatabs during or after neurosurgery as a preventive measure. By controlling the seizures, you have a reduced risk of falling and causing harm or bodily injury while working, playing, or travelling.

Allows for Better Control of Your Seizures

When taken as directed, the active ingredient called Phenytoin works by interfering with the proteins (ion channels) found on the surface of the nerve cells in your brain so they are not able to let the sodium charged ions enter the nerve cells. This action results in the electrical field remaining unchanged instead of misfiring and causing a seizure. Dilantin Infatabs is not a cure for epilepsy, but it can allow you to go about your daily tasks with peace of mind.

Conditions Treated by Dilantin Infatabs

A grand mal seizure, once called tonic clonic, is pretty traumatic to see and can be dangerous for the one experiencing it. The person will first lose consciousness and fall down. Shortly after, the body will stiffen up for 15 or so seconds before the convulsions begin, which can last for a minute or two. Then the body will go limp until consciousness is regained shortly afterward.

Complex partial seizures involve the person engaging in purposeful movements called automatisms, such as fist clenching, lip smacking, and even walking and talking. When spoken to or asked a question, the person may not respond at all or could answer you with nonsense words. These kinds of seizures usually last 30 seconds to 2 minutes long.

Before Dilantin Infatabs is Prescribed

If you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or are breast feeding, tell your doctor before taking Dilantin Infatabs. Although there may be a risk to your unborn or nursing baby, you may be taking a bigger risk by not taking treatment for seizures. Discuss other medical conditions or allergies with your doctor and list any OTC or Rx drugs you currently use or take, including herbal, dietary, and vitamin supplements. This will help determine if Phenytoin is the right medication for you.

Dilantin Infatabs Precautions and Recommendations

Until you know how Dilantin Infatabs will affect you, use caution around machinery and be aware of your surroundings. Dilantin Infatabs can reduce the effectiveness of hormonal birth control pill, patches, or injections so you will need to also use a non-hormonal product such as a diaphragm, condom, or spermicide to prevent a pregnancy. Do not stop taking Dilantin Infatabs suddenly or you may experience an increase in seizure activity.

If this is the first time taking Dilantin Infatabs, it could take 7-10 days before you notice its benefits, so be patient. It is during this time your doctor may decide to adjust your dosage of Dilantin Infatabs if required.
