EDECRIN (ETHACRYNIC ACID)

Edecrin Description

Your doctor may prescribe Edecrin if you are experiencing fluid retention (edema) as a result of kidney or liver disease or you are in heart failure. Edecrin is a strong loop diuretic, so named after a certain part of your kidney called the loop of Henle. Diuretics are also referred to as water pills because they help your body get rid of excess water in your body that can cause swelling. The active ingredient of Edecrin is Ethacrynic Acid and it may only be recommended for short-term treatment as it can deplete your body of essential electrolytes and minerals.

The Active Ingredient Helps Expel Excess Fluid Through Urination

When taken as directed, Edecrin works in the loop of Henle, one of the tubes in your kidneys that allow a variety of components to be reabsorbed into your bloodstream or is excreted in your urine. Ethacrynic Acid’s job is to stop sodium and chloride ions from being reabsorbed into your bloodstream which increases the amount of ions you pass in your urine. You may want to take Edecrin in the morning so your sleep is not disturbed by frequent trips to the bathroom.

Conditions Treated by Edecrin

Scarring of your liver, called cirrhosis, affects how this organ functions and you may have an increased pressure in the large vein that carries blood from your intestines, spleen, and pancreas into your liver. The result could be the retention of fluid in your legs and abdominal cavity that can make you uncomfortable and interfere with your breathing.

Those with kidney disease or damage could have difficulties eliminating enough fluid and sodium from your bloodstream and cause a leakage of fluid that may pool around your legs or cause your eyes to be puffy. If your heart is unable to pump a sufficient amount of blood to other parts of your body, it can build up in your limbs and cause edema.

Before Edecrin is Prescribed

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or are breast feeding as Edecrin may be harmful to your unborn or nursing baby. Discuss your medical history with your doctor and list any OTC or Rx medications you currently take or use, including herbal remedies and dietary or vitamin supplements to be certain you won’t be at risk for serious side effects.

Recommendations and Safe Use of Edecrin

You should postpone any activities or tasks that could be considered unsafe until you know how Edecrin will affect you. Do not start, stop, or alter the dosage of any medications you are on without talking to your doctor first. Be aware of any signs of dehydration while taking Edecrin, including dizziness, confusion, severe headache, or muscle cramps.
