GLUMETZA (METFORMIN HYDROCHLORIDE)

Glumetza Description

Glumetza contains the active ingredient Metformin Hydrochloride-Extended Release and is an oral hypoglycemic medication prescribed to help control blood sugar levels, especially in people who have type ll diabetes. Glumetza is used when diet, exercise, and weight reduction have not been found to lower blood glucose well enough.

This drug is available as a pill, and should be taken with one of your main meals. If you are interested in purchasing Glumetza or generic Metformin Hydrochloride – Extended Release, you will need to obtain a prescription from your doctor. The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.

How Glumetza Works in Your Body

When taken as directed, Glumetza reduces the amount of glucose made by the liver and makes it easier for glucose to enter into the tissues of your body by making muscles cells more sensitive to Insulin. After eating a meal, Glumetza also slows down the absorption of sugar from your intestines into the bloodstream. This helps to prevent a sugar spike after consuming food. Glumetza has also shown to make you feel fuller while consuming fewer calories so it’s possible to lose weight if you can reduce your calorie intake by 500.

Conditions Treated by Glumetza

Glumetza is often prescribed as a first-line treatment for type ll diabetes. This condition develops because your body does not effectively use or produce a sugar-processing hormone called insulin. It tends to cause extreme spikes in blood sugar, as insulin is needed to transfer glucose (sugar) out of the blood. Without treatment, it may force the sugars to build up to dangerous levels, and increase your risk for nerve damage, kidney damage, and diabetic coma.

Type ll diabetes is far more common than type l. One of the major problems with type ll diabetes is that in its early stages symptoms can be so mild they go unnoticed. Symptoms of type ll diabetes include; thirst, frequent urination, and tiredness. If you are overweight you will significantly increase your risk of developing type ll diabetes.

Before You Take Glumetza

You should not take Glumetza if: you are pregnant or breast feeding; you have reduced kidney function or severe liver disease; you have type l diabetes. Advise your doctor of other medical conditions and allergies you have and the medications you take or use, including Rx and OTC meds, herbal remedies, and vitamin or dietary supplements. This will help to determine if Glumetza is the right drug for you.

Important Info When Taking Glumetza

Do not use Glumetza if you are currently experiencing diabetic ketoacidosis. Limit alcohol while using Glumetza because it can increase your risk of lactic acidosis and developing low blood sugar. Older adults may be a greater risk for side effects such as low blood sugar or lactic acidosis. Until you know how Glumetza will affect you, refrain from any activities that require you to be alert.

Possible Side Effects of Glumetza

  • Headache
  • Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
  • Blurred vision
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Drowsiness
  • Insomnia

Inform your physician right away if you notice excessive thirst, frequent urination, nausea, and confusion during treatment; these could signal a potentially serious condition called lactic acidosis and may require further treatment.
