ILOTYCIN EYE OINTMENT (ERYTHROMYCIN)

Ilotycin Eye Ointment Description

A prescription for Ilotycin Eye Ointment may be recommended by your doctor if you have bacterial conjunctivitis. Conjunctivitis can be either viral or bacterial, so many doctors will start you on an antibiotic while waiting for confirmation as to which it is. If it turns out you have viral conjunctivitis, you will discontinue antibiotic eye meds and let the virus run its course. Chances are high though that the infection is bacterial and found to be caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae or Staphylococcus aureus.

You probably know that the other name for conjunctivitis is pink eye. The conjunctiva is the mucous membrane that covers the whites of your eyes and lines the inside of your eyelids. The red or pink color occurs from the inflammation as blood vessels swell up as part of your immune response to the bacteria. Ilotycin Eye Ointment is also prescribed for ocular infections of the cornea caused by bacteria.

Stop Bacteria From Being Able to Grow and Multiply

When you place Ilotycin Eye Ointment or generic Erythromycin as directed, the bacteria will be unable to produce the proteins they need in order to mature and multiply. Ilotycin Eye Ointment is termed bacteriostatic, meaning it does not actually kill the bacteria but leaves them unable to increase their numbers so any remaining will simply die. Your body’s immune system will also help with destroying bacteria. The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.

Conditions Treated by Ilotycin Eye Ointment

Pink eye, whether it is viral or bacterial, is highly contagious. Children, in particular, are susceptible to being infected by a playmate or classmate that has conjunctivitis as they are too preoccupied to remember to wash their hands before eating or after a trip to the bathroom. The bacteria can be passed from using the same toys, crayons, face cloth, or any object they may touch after an infected child has had contact with it after rubbing or wiping their eyes. Children older than 5 years of age are less likely to become infected.

Before Ilotycin Eye Ointment is Prescribed

Explain other medical conditions and allergies you or your child have to your doctor and list any OTC or Rx drugs that are currently taken or used, including herbal remedies and vitamin supplements. This will help your doctor determine if Ilotycin Eye Ointment is safe to use. Keep Ilotycin Eye Ointment and all other medications out of children’s reach and never this or other meds with anyone else.

Ilotycin Eye Ointment Precautions

Do not touch the tip of the tube of Ilotycin Eye Ointment to any part of the eye being treated as it can become contaminated. Apply for the prescribed time as directed by the doctor, even if the eye appears to look and feel better. Vision will be temporarily impaired so use caution while carrying out any tasks or activities that requires clear vision.
