If you believe your child is exhibiting signs of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), your doctor or pediatrician will recommend psychological testing and questionnaires completed by the parents, for a start. Once interviews, observations, and testing is complete and it is found that your child between the age of 6 and 17 years old has ADHD, your doctor can prescribe Intuniv ER along with a possible stimulant, and recommendations for behavioral and psychological modifications. Intuniv ER is not for adults and will not cure ADHD.
Intuniv ER (extended release) contains Guanfacine, a non-stimulant Selective Alpha2A-Adrenergic Receptor Agonist and although it is not entirely known how it helps children with ADHD, researchers believe it works on certain receptors in the prefrontal cortex, which is the last part of the brain to fully develop. The role of the prefrontal cortex includes focus, impulse control, personality, and organizing and controlling emotional reactions, all of which are affected by ADHD. Intuniv ER appears to help gain better control of these functions so there are less disruptive behaviors, lost tempers, or hyperactivity.
It is thought that ADHD may run in families and seems to appear early in the child’s life as their brain is developing. Younger children are known to be anxious, excited, and easily distracted at times because this is what they do. However, if you begin to notice that your child’s ability to pay attention, follow simple instructions, sit still, or is always interrupting you, talk to your pediatrician or doctor.
It may surprise many people to learn that as your child may be diagnosed with ADHD, your doctor might point out that you or your spouse is most likely a candidate for the same diagnosis. Once called ADD (attention deficit disorder), it was changed to ADHD and was divided into three subtypes.
Disclose other known medical conditions or allergies your child has to your doctor and list any OTC or Rx drugs that are taken or used, including herbal remedies and vitamin supplements, to determine if Intuniv ER is safe for your child.
Until you know how Intuniv ER will affect your child, be watchful of their activity so they do not sustain any injuries should they become dizzy or tired. Do not share Intuniv ER with others, even if their symptoms are similar. Keep out of children’s reach and store at room temperature and away from heat, light, and moisture.
