ISORDIL (ISOSORBIDE DINITRATE)

Isordil Description

Isordil is from the family of nitrate drugs that are prescribed to prevent angina attacks. These are chest pains that usually result from restricted blood flow to your heart muscle when your coronary arteries become blocked or narrowed, a condition known as coronary artery disease (CAD).

Angina resembles what most people believe a heart would feel like; chest pain that can spread to your arms, shoulders, or neck, pressure or tightness in your chest, and pain in your back, jaw, or upper abdomen. Isordil or generic Isosorbide Dinitrate will not stop an angina attack that is already in progress. The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.

Isordil Can Help Control Angina Attacks

Isordil works as a vasodilator, which means that it dilates your blood vessels in order to provide a more efficient blood flow that supplies your heart with oxygen-enriched blood. Your heart will not have to work as hard and the pain of angina is relieved. To further reduce the pressure your heart is under to provide the rest of your tissues and organs with blood, Isordil also helps to relax veins so less blood is returned to your heart. There is no cure for angina, but Isordil can help control the number of attacks you have to endure.

More Information About Angina

Angina is your body’s way of warning you that your heart is straining. The pain usually only lasts for a few minutes and can be triggered by physical exertion, stress, experiencing extreme hot or cold weather, or when consuming alcohol or smoking. If you find that the pain is not subsiding after 10-15 minutes, it could be a heart attack and you need medical attention right away before your heart muscle sustains permanent damage.

You may be able to reduce angina attacks by taking control of some of the risk factors that can cause it. These include hypertension, high blood cholesterol, and diabetes. Eating healthier, reducing stress, quitting smoking, and limiting your alcohol consumption is a great start. If changing your diet and lifestyle doesn’t work, then medications such as Isordil will help. Your next step may be a surgical procedure to widen or bypass your narrowed arteries.

Before You Take Isordil

Tell your doctor about any OTC or Rx drugs you are taking, especially those for treating erectile dysfunction as it may cause serious side effects when taken with Isordil. Discuss your medical history with your doctor so it can be determined if Isordil is the right medication for your angina. Ask your doctor if Isordil or generic Isosorbide Dinitrate is safe to take if you are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breast feeding. Do not suddenly stop taking Isordil without first consulting your doctor.

Isordil Precautions and Recommendations

Until you know how your body will react to Isordil, do not drive or operate machinery and avoid other tasks that may be considered risky or unsafe. Do not start or stop any drugs while taking Isordil unless your doctor has been notified. Your doctor may recommend a fast-acting medicine to take for angina attacks that occur while taking Isordil.
