Kombiglyze XR may be prescribed to treat type 2 diabetes. This is a combination of Metformin and Saxagliptin in an extended release formula you only need to take once a day, usually before your evening meal. Because it works with your own insulin, Kombiglyze XR is not prescribed for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis, which is a serious complication of diabetes.
Metformin belongs to the biguanide group of medications and Saxagliptin is a DPP-4 (Dipeptidyl peptidase-4) inhibitor. You can also do your body a favor if you start eating healthier, exercise, lose weight, and stop smoking. Improving your glycemic control is the main objective of your doctor and you are responsible for doing your part, too.
Metformin and Saxagliptin work together to decrease the amount of sugar that is absorbed from your gut, reduce the amount of sugar made by your liver, encourage your body to respond better to the insulin your body is still making, and help your body produce more insulin after a meal so your blood sugar does not spike. Some type 2 diabetics have noticed a decrease in their weight when taking Kombiglyze XR as well.
Type 2 diabetes is quite manageable but there is no cure for it. Many people may not even know they have diabetes due to its slow onset. Being lethargic, hungry, thirsty, and urinating more than usual may tip you off that something is going on with your body. Insulin may not sound important, but your body needs it to manage blood sugar levels. After eating, the glucose from the carbs you ate provides you with energy. Any excess will be stored in your cells for energy as you need it.
Insulin is the only thing that can convince your cells to ‘unlock’ in order to store glucose. If you cannot produce enough insulin, you will not be able to store much for energy so your body will look for another source. Sugar levels in your bloodstream will also increase and you are at risk for other medical problems that are serious.
Discuss with your doctor any risks of taking Kombiglyze XR if you are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breast feeding. To be certain that Kombiglyze XR is right for you, tell your doctor about other medical conditions or allergies you have and list all current OTC and Rx drugs you currently take or use, including herbal remedies and dietary or vitamin supplements.
You should not take Kombiglyze XR if you have type 1 diabetes as your body does not produce any insulin for Kombiglyze XR to work with. Until you know how your body will react to Kombiglyze XR, avoid doing any tasks considered unsafe, including operating a vehicle or machinery. Do not skip meals as your blood sugar may drop too much when taking Kombiglyze XR. You should always keep a source of sugar with you for times such as this, like a piece of hard candy, a non-diet pop, honey, or glucose tablets.
