LEXAPRO (ESCITALOPRAM OXALATE)

What is Lexapro?

Lexapro belongs to a group of anti-depressant medications called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which means that it alters moods by affecting certain chemicals in the brain. Lexapro is an oral medication that is generally prescribed to adults who have mood disorders. It is also available under its generic name, Escitalopram Oxalate.

Lexapro medication usually begins to work within two to four weeks, although it may take several weeks to experience the full effects of the medication. You will need a valid prescription from your doctor to buy Lexapro generic or brand name product. The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.

Conditions Treated by Lexapro

Lexapro medication is prescribed to treat mental disorders such as major depression and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), which are linked to chemical imbalances in the brain. Generalized anxiety disorder is characterized by excessive or exaggerated worry about every day events. In addition to feelings of anxiety, irritability, and restlessness, anxiety disorders may also cause physical symptoms such as headaches, nausea, muscle tension, and trembling.

These disorders can be quite debilitating for the individuals living with them, since they usually include extreme sadness, hopelessness, and worry among their most common symptoms. Without treatment, they may even lead to a complete loss of normal functioning. Lexapro helps by correcting the chemical imbalances, though it is not a cure for these conditions.

What to Tell Your Doctor Before You Take Lexapro

It is important for your doctor to know whether you have been diagnosed with diabetes, glaucoma, epilepsy, or liver/kidney disease before you start taking Lexapro. You should advise your doctor of any other medical conditions you have, as well as any prescription drugs or over the counter medications you are taking. Your doctor should also be advised if you have a history of alcohol or drug abuse or if you have ever experienced suicidal thoughts.

Lexapro Precautions

Watch for new or worsening symptoms or suicidal thoughts during treatment with Lexapro medication, and tell your doctor immediately if they develop. Do not suddenly stop taking this medication as this can cause Lexapro withdrawal symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, headache, sleep disturbances, and anxiety. This medication should be discontinued gradually upon the advice of a doctor.

You will need to avoid several medications while taking Lexapro. These include certain blood thinners, migraine headache drugs, and narcotics, which can lead to negative interactions if combined.
