Mavik is called an angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. Angiotensin II is a powerful chemical in your body that causes contractions in the muscles surrounding your blood vessels. This narrowing increases the pressure inside those vessels which makes your heart work harder and drives your blood pressure up.
Your doctor may prescribe Mavik or generic Trandolapril if you have high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, kidney problems as a result of diabetes, or to improve your survival if you have already had a heart attack. The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.
When taken as directed, Mavik works to slow down the actions of the angiotensin converting enzyme. Angiotensin I is converted into angiotensin II in your blood from the ACE enzyme, so by inhibiting the production of ACE, the conversion cannot take place and there is less angiotensin II.
Now the muscles around the blood vessels are able to relax and widen so proper blood flow is restored. Blood pressure lowers, your heart is not working as hard, and your risk of a cardiac event or the progression of kidney disease is reduced. Adjustments may be required on the dose of Mavik you are taking or a diuretic may be added to your regimen.
Due to the risk of damaging the large arteries that lead to your kidneys and the tiny blood vessels in your kidneys, high blood pressure is the most common cause of kidney disease. Dangerous levels of fluid and waste can build-up because your kidney’s filtering system is not functioning well and you may be facing dialysis or a possible kidney transplant.
Hypertension has no symptoms that can alert you that something is not right. Monitor your blood pressure, exercise, eat healthy, and stop smoking are some of the ways to try and avoid a diagnosis of high blood pressure before you have a heart attack, stroke, or heart /kidney disease.
If you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or are breast feeding, tell your doctor before taking Mavik as it could harm your unborn or nursing baby. Discuss other medical conditions and allergies with your doctor and list all OTC and Rx drugs you currently take or use, including herbal remedies and vitamin or dietary supplements. This allows your doctor determine if Mavik is the right drug for your situation.
Until you know how Mavik will affect you, avoid taking part in any activities that require you to be alert. Do not consume alcohol while taking Mavik as this could cause your blood pressure to fall too low. You should not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medications without talking to your doctor first as this could change how Mavik works for you.
There is enough medication in Mavik or generic Trandolapril to harm a child so always store drugs out of children’s reach and never share meds with anyone else.
