MIRAPEX (PRAMIPEXOLE)

Description of Mirapex

Mirapex is an immediate-release tablet prescribed to treat symptoms of Parkinson’s disease which can include tremors, stiffness, and difficulty walking. Although there is no cure for Parkinson’s disease, Mirapex or Pramipexole generic can help to reduce symptoms so that you can carry on with your daily tasks and activities. The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.

How Mirapex Works to Improve Symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease

Dopamine is one of the brain chemicals known as a neurotransmitter that is important for communicating information throughout your body. Parkinson’s disease is a result of neurons dying in the area of the brain that produces dopamine which is responsible for movements and muscle control.

Mirapex is classed as a dopamine agonist that works to increase the amount of dopamine and maintain a healthy chemical level by restoring dopamine activity in your brain by delaying its reuptake (absorption).

Other Conditions Treated by Mirapex

Mirapex is also approved for treating restless leg syndrome, or RLS. This is a neurological disorder that is characterized by unpleasant sensations in your legs that promote an overwhelming urge to move them. RLS seems to become more noticeable at night when you are trying to fall asleep. Alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine may worsen the problem of RLS, as well as certain medications and food.

Some of those affected by RLS have found that swimming, walking, or doing yoga has helped with RLS. Your doctor may check for underlying causes that may trigger the tingly, creeping sensations of RLS, including a possible iron deficiency or the early stages of pregnancy.

Before You Take Mirapex

Be certain to inform your doctor of other disorders or conditions you have or are being treated for. Other medications, whether over the counter or prescribed, can alter how Mirapex affects you or can produce unwanted side effects. Mirapex or the generic Pramipexole may not be recommended if you are pregnant or breast-feeding so you should use effective birth control methods. Talk to your doctor right away if you become pregnant while taking Mirapex.

Precautions for Mirapex

Patients taking Mirapex should be aware of the possibility of unusual side effects. Changes in behavior, including impulse control disorders such as uncontrollable urges to gamble, increased sex drive, compulsive shopping and binge eating, have been reported in people taking this medicine. This medication can cause sleepiness, and on some occasions people have experienced a sudden onset of sleep without warning. Revisit your doctor right away should any of these drug effects occur.
