MYSOLINE (PRIMIDONE)

Mysoline Description

Mysoline belongs to a class of drugs known as barbiturate anticonvulsants and may be prescribed alone or with other anticonvulsants in the control of grand mal, psychomotor and focal epileptic seizures. Your brain and nerves are made up of many nerve cells that use electrical signals to communicate. These signals must be carefully controlled in order for your brain and nerves to work accurately.

If abnormally fast and repetitive electrical signals are released in your brain, it can become over-stimulated, disturbing normal function that can result in a seizure. Taking Mysoline or generic Primidone as prescribed helps to regulate the activity in your brain. The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.

How Mysoline Works to Stabilize Your Brain’s Electrical Activity

The normal pattern of neuronal activity becomes disturbed in people with epilepsy, causing odd sensations, emotions, and behavior as well as possible convulsions, spasms, and even a loss of consciousness.

When taken as instructed, Mysoline breaks down in your body and works by controlling the abnormal electrical activity in the brain that occurs during a seizure by preventing the entrance of sodium into nerve cells. It also helps by balancing the level of brain chemicals called neurotransmitters. Mysoline or the generic Primidone are only available with a prescription from your doctor.

Info About the Seizures Treated by Mysoline

A grand mal seizure, also known as a generalized tonic-clonic seizure, features a loss of consciousness and violent muscle contractions. Most of the time grand mal seizure is caused by epilepsy, however, this type of seizure is triggered by other health problems, such as extremely low blood sugar, high fever or a stroke. Partial or focal seizures occur when the electrical disturbance of the brain remains in a limited area; this is the most common type of seizure. A psychomotor seizure is a temporary impairment of consciousness characterized by psychic symptoms, loss of judgment, automatic behavior, and abnormal acts. Psychic symptoms, including visual and auditory hallucinations, a sense of unreality, and déjà vu, may be present.
