Nitro-Dur is a nitrate medication that contains glyceryl trinitrate, better known as Nitroglycerin, and is prescribed for those experiencing angina from heart disease. Angina is the pain felt in your chest if your arteries become constricted by fatty deposits called plaques. It can resemble what most individuals imagine a heart attack feels like and may very well be a warning that you are at risk for one. The pains and tightness you feel in your chest are an indication that your heart is struggling for oxygen.
Once you have applied a Nitro-Dur or generic Nitroglycerin Transdermal patch as directed, the active ingredient is absorbed into your body and converted into nitric oxide. This chemical relaxes your veins and arteries which allows more room and less resistance so your heart is able to receive efficient oxygen and blood and pump it to your tissues and organs. This reduces painful angina attacks but it is not a fast-acting solution so you will want to apply and replace Nitro-Dur patches as your doctor recommends. The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.
Angina is usually caused by coronary artery disease (CAD). Your heart muscle is supplied with blood and oxygen from your coronary arteries. During exercise or other activities that cause you to exert your body, your heart needs to pump out more blood to your tissues and organs. If your arteries are narrowed from the build-up of plaques, your heart starts to strain to keep up with the demand and causes the tightness and pain in your chest. People that have taken on a healthier diet and lifestyle may be able to avert the risk of a heart attack.
Your doctor may recommend a prescription for Nitro-Dur patches if you have already had a heart attack or are at an increased risk for one. If you have high blood pressure (hypertension) and will be undergoing surgery, your doctor may apply a Nitro-Dur patch pre-operatively to widen your arteries and lower your blood pressure as a precaution.
Discuss other medical conditions and allergies you have before applying Nitroglycerin Transdermal patches and tell your doctor about any over the counter or Rx medicine you are taking, including vitamin supplements and herbal remedies. If you are currently taking drugs for erectile dysfunction, you will not be able to use the Nitro-Dur patches safely. If you are pregnant, could become pregnant, or are breast feeding, ask your doctor if Nitro-Dur is safe for your unborn or nursing baby.
Until you are sure how you are going to react to Nitro-Dur, avoid driving, operating machinery, and performing unsafe tasks. You should not drink alcohol while using a Nitro-Dur patch as it can amplify any dizziness or blurred vision caused as a side effect of the drug or cause a fall in your blood pressure. To decrease your chance of building up a tolerance for the active ingredients of Nitro-Dur, allow for some nitrate-free time each day to keep from becoming resistant to the drug.
Call your doctor right away if you experience a worsening chest pain, blurred vision, sweating, or rapid heartbeats.
