PARNATE (TRANYLCYPROMINE)

Parnate Description

Parnate is an antidepressant medication that may be prescribed for those that have tried other drugs but have failed to produce positive results. The active ingredient of Parnate is Tranylcypromine, a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor that can help reduce symptoms of sadness, sleep problems, weight changes, and feeling like you want to be isolated from everyone and everything.

Depression can interfere with your work, school, and home life and unless you seek treatment, you will not simply “get over it”. Parnate is not a cure for depression, but it can help you overcome your sadness and allow you to take an active role in living your life.

How an MAOI Can Help Improve Symptoms of Depression

Once you take it as directed, Parnate goes to work by blocking the action of the monoamine oxidase enzyme that breaks down certain mood-elevating brain chemicals called neurotransmitters, namely dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine. This results in these chemicals being more available and improving your brain cell communication. Once your neurotransmitters become more balanced, your moods become lighter and more positive so you’re able to enjoy doing things you once found pleasure in and you no longer have a bleak outlook on life.

Conditions Treated by Parnate

Depression is not just a momentary bout of feeling doom and gloom, but a medical condition that may require medication, therapy, and a great support system of family and friends. There are several factors believed to contribute to depression, such as a family history, difficult or traumatic life events, neglect or abuse, having a chronic illness, and substance or alcohol abuse.

Talk therapy is extremely helpful for repairing some of the mental damage done by any of these factors by understanding your symptoms and learning how to deal with them. You may be required to take Parnate as a long term drug so you won’t have to worry about the emotional, physical, behavioral, and cognitive symptoms of depression taking over again.

Before you Take Parnate

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breast feeding before taking Parnate as it may be harmful to your unborn or nursing baby. Go over your other medical conditions and allergies with your doctor and provide a list of OTC and Rx medicine you are taking, including herbal remedies and vitamin supplements so your doctor can determine if Parnate will be safe to take without any negative drug interactions.

Parnate Precautions and Recommendations

You may be given a list of foods that you should not eat while taking Parnate. Aged, cured, dried, or fermented foods contain high levels of tyramine which can cause your blood pressure to become dangerously high if you are taking any MAO inhibitor drugs. Be self aware of any signs of wanting to harm yourself while taking Parnate and inform those close to you about any indicators that your mood has worsened.
