PHENERGAN (PROMETHAZINE)

Phenergan Description

Phenergan is an antihistamine that may be prescribed for several reasons, including motion sickness, seasonal and year-round allergy symptoms, pre and post-operative nausea, anxiety pre-operatively, and for post-operative pain relief and sleep. Phenergan or generic Promethazine should not be given to children under the age of two years. The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.

How Phenergan Benefits Those with Allergies, Motion Sickness, and More

When you come into contact with dust, pollen, perfume, or other allergy triggers, your body’s immune response includes mast cells that send histamine as a defensive tactic to protect you from any harm. Your eyes water, nose runs, and you start sneezing. The extra fluid is from the swelling of your nasal lining that squeezes fluid out, causing a runny nose and watery eyes. Histamine thinks it is protecting you by expelling this fluid.

Taking Phenergan as directed blocks histamine from binding to its receptors in various parts of your body and ends your allergic reaction. Phenergan is not a cure for allergies, but it is an effective treatment to control the symptoms.

Conditions Treated by Phenergan

Motion sickness can definitely dampen excitement about travelling, whether it’s by car, plane, boat, or train. Phenergan can help by blocking messages to the vomit center in your brain to avoid becoming nauseous. When you are travelling in a vehicle on land or water, your brain receives mixed signals. In a car, your eyes see the scenery passing by, yet your body experiences little movement.

In a boat, you see the unmoving horizon, but the rocking or swaying from the waves is saying that you are in motion. Your inner ear contains motion sensing organs that are essential to whether or not you will become sick. Without Phenergan, the mixed signals your brain receives alert it as a possible hallucination that was most likely caused by some sort of poison. So your vomit center gives the green light to try and save you by inducing nausea and vomiting.

Before You Receive a Phenergan Prescription

Ask your doctor about any harmful effects that Phenergan may cause if you take it while you are pregnant, may become pregnant, or when breast feeding. Discuss any medical conditions or allergies you have before taking Phenergan and tell you doctor about other Rx or OTC meds you take, including herbal remedies and dietary or vitamin supplements. Your doctor can then determine if Phenergan is the best medication for you.

Phenergan Precautions and Proper Use

Do not give Phenergan to children under two years of age because of the sedative effects. The dosage and treatment plan will depend on what you are being prescribed Phenergan for and your age. You should not operate a vehicle, machinery, or perform any tasks that require you to be alert. Do not drink alcohol while taking Phenergan as it can increase certain side effects.
