PRANDIN (REPAGLINIDE)

Take Prandin to Control Blood Glucose Levels

Prandin or generic Repaglinide is a meglitinide medication that may be prescribed if you are a type 2 diabetic and need help to control your blood glucose levels. Type 2 diabetics are not able to produce enough insulin, or their body is unable to use the insulin that is produced in an efficient manner. This medication will not cure your diabetes, but it can help to greatly reduce other health risks that high blood glucose levels can cause. The generic alternative is not manufactured by the same company that makes the brand product.

How Prandin Works to Regulate Sugar Spikes

Prandin works on the beta cells in your pancreas to stimulate insulin production. This is important to avoid a spike in your glucose (sugar) after eating a meal. Without insulin, the glucose from the meals you eat would not be absorbed and used as energy by cells in your body. Instead, it builds up in your bloodstream. This could lead to possible blindness, kidney failure, or a heart attack unless your blood glucose is not regimented with the help of a healthier diet, exercise, no smoking, and medicine such as Prandin. Although very treatable, there is no cure for type 1 or 2 diabetes.

Conditions Treated by Prandin

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes mellitus and its onset is fairly slow. If there is a history of diabetes in your family, you are overweight, and your diet consists of junk food that is usually high in saturated and trans fats, the odds are pretty good that you will become a type 2 diabetic. See your doctor if you begin to have blurry vision, fatigue, excessive thirst, and are slow to heal small cuts or sores.

Before You Take Prandin

Discuss other medical conditions and allergies you have with your doctor and provide a list of any current OTC or Rx drugs you are on, including dietary and vitamin supplements or herbal preparations that may interfere with taking Prandin. Although there are no studies performed that show Prandin may be harmful for unborn or nursing baby, tell your doctor if you are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breast feeding so it can be determined if the benefits outweigh any risks.

Important Info Regarding Prandin

Do not adjust your dosage of Prandin without the knowledge and consent of your doctor. Do not take Prandin if you have type 1 diabetes because your body is unable to produce any insulin. Prandin is formulated to work on the sugar spike that occurs after a meal, so if you skip a meal or are required to fast, ask your doctor when or if you should take Prandin. If you have added a meal, take Prandin as directed before you eat.

Until you know how Prandin will affect you, take care when driving or operating machinery as you may experience dizziness. Skipping a meal, exercising strenuously, or consuming alcohol may cause your blood sugar to become low making you feel weak, drowsy, sweaty, or faint so be certain you have glucose tablets or a source of sugar with you to quickly raise your glucose.
