RELPAX (ELETRIPTAN)

Relpax Description

Nobody really seems to know the cause of migraine headaches, but it is believed that something happens that makes the blood vessels in your brain dilate so blood flow increases and this results in a painful headache. There is no fast cure for migraines, but you can talk to your doctor about Relpax to help relieve your symptoms and get you back to your daily tasks without the blinding pain of a migraine. Some migraines can last as long as 72 hours and, depending on the severity of the symptoms, you cannot work , go to school, or even drive safely until the pain recedes.

Reduce the Length of Your Migraine Pain with Relpax

Eletriptan is the active ingredient in Relpax and it works as a selective serotonin receptor agonist. When taken as directed, Relpax binds to the serotonin receptors in your brain by mimicking serotonin, an important neurotransmitter. This action results in more serotonin being available in your brain and blood vessels constrict while some nerves are prevented from sending pain messages to your brain.

Types of Migraines and Some Triggers

Some of you may experience visual or sensory warnings so you know a migraine is coming; these can include seeing zigzag lines that cross your field of vision, flashing lights, or a numbness or tingling in your hand. This alerts you that the migraine pain could start in about 60 minutes after the aura appears, or you may be fortunate enough to only have the aura and never experience the pain.

The most common migraine is without the aura and you experience head pain so intense you are sensitive to light and sound and can even become nauseous. Migraine triggers include caffeine, red wine, food additives, stress, weather changes, and even changes in your hormone levels when you menstruate can set it in motion.

Before Relpax is Prescribed to You

Ask your doctor about any risks to taking Relpax while you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or are breast feeding. Discuss other medical conditions or allergies with your doctor and list any OTC or Rx drugs you currently use or take, including herbal remedies and dietary or vitamin supplements. This helps your doctor to determine if Relpax is safe for you to take.

Relpax Proper Use

Relpax will not prevent a migraine from occurring or reduce the number of migraine attacks you will experience, it is to be taken at the first sign of a migraine starting in order to decrease the duration of a migraine. Until you know how Relpax will affect you, do not drive, operate machinery, or perform any task that requires you to be alert. If your migraines are unchanged after taking Relpax, do not take more or less than prescribed until you have consulted with your doctor.
