Restasis is a prescription eye drop medicine used to treat keratoconjunctivitis sicca, also known as dry eye. It is an ophthalmic emulsion formula, meaning it has a higher viscosity than oil or water so it can better stay on your eyes.
Restasis is for people with suppressed tear production caused by ocular inflammation (inflammation of the middle layer of the eye).
The generic alternative of Restasis, Cyclosporine ophthalmic, is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.
Restasis helps treat suppressed tear production, a condition that can present itself with age or with certain medical conditions, such as diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis.
Dry eye syndrome can also occur from the dysfunction of the meibomian glands that reduce oil production and lead to the extreme evaporation of tears, called evaporative dry eye (EDE). EDE is the most common form of dry eye syndrome. Using Restasis eye drops as directed helps reduce the inflammation that causes redness and itchiness.
Without treatment for dry eye, damage to the corneas may occur. See an ophthalmologist to ensure proper eye care. Be patient; it may take around three to six months before you feel the full effects of Restasis or generic Cyclosporine.
As with all prescription drugs, there are potential side effects of Restasis.

Because Restasis and Restasis generic may cause blurred vision, you should not drive, use machinery, or do any activity that requires clear vision until you are sure you can perform these and other activities safely.
