Synvisc One Description

If you are not receiving satisfactory pain relief from your current medications for osteoarthritis, ask your doctor about Synvisc One. This is an injectable gelatinous fluid that will supplement your own natural synovial fluid that cushions the surface of your knee joint cartilage to allow smooth movement as you walk. There is no cure for osteoarthritis (OA), but treatment with Synvisc One can last up to six months and provide greater mobility and pain relief. A Synvisc One injection is done by your doctor during a regular office visit.

Joint Relief with Injection of Hylan to Cushion Movements

The active ingredient in Synvisc One is Hylan, which is formulated from Hyaluronan from chicken combs. This same type of fluid is in your joint fluid and can break down over time causing pain and inflammation as the cartilage wears down from the friction caused during any movement. Once your doctor injects Synvisc One into the space where your synovial fluid is, your knee joint is now able to move more fluidly and without causing more damage to your cartilage.

Conditions Treated by Synvisc One

Osteoarthritis usually occurs after the age of 45 and is caused by a change in the cells and proteins in bone and cartilage. Other risk factors include being overweight, repeated injury to your knee joint from your job or sports, having another type of arthritis, increasing age, and genetics.

Women tend to have more severe problems with OA after menopause, believed to be due to decreased estrogen levels that cause increased bone absorption. There is inadequate new bone formation so bone mass is affected negatively. Your knees are weight-bearing joints that can be more prone to osteoarthritis.

Before Synvisc One is Administered

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or nursing your baby to be certain there are no health risks from Synvisc One. Explain to your doctor other medical conditions and allergies you have, especially if you are allergic to avian products such as eggs, poultry, or feathers. List any Rx or OTC drugs you currently take or use, including herbal remedies and dietary or vitamin supplements, so your doctor can determine if Synvisc One is right for you.

Synvisc One Recommendations

After your Synvisc One injection, you should return home and do not attempt any strenuous activities for 48 hours, including jogging, lifting heavy items, high impact sports, or standing for a long period of time. If you experience pain or swelling at home, apply ice to your knee for ten minutes at a time as needed. Call your doctor if the pain increases or swelling worsens.
