Topicort Cream Description

Topicort Cream is a potent corticosteroid medication that is prescribed to treat the redness, swelling, and inflammation you experience with eczema, psoriasis, poison ivy, insect bites, and other types of dermatitis. It’s important that you treat the affected area quickly before you start scratching which can result in broken skin and the opportunity for a bacterial or fungal infection to set in. Topicort Cream will not treat bacterial, fungal, or viral skin infections.

How Topicort Cream Suppresses Your Immune Response

When applied as directed, the active ingredient Desoximetasone is absorbed by your skin cells where it blocks the chemical signals that your immune system sends when there is a threat or injury. These chemicals include prostaglandins which are the cause of inflammation and redness. Once the immune response has been suppressed, the redness, swelling, and itching are reduced as is the painful inflammation. Be sure your hands are clean before applying Topicort Cream and remember to wash them thoroughly afterwards unless it is your hands you are treating.

Conditions Treated by Topicort Cream

Although there is no cure for eczema and psoriasis, Topicort Cream can provide relief during flare-ups. Contact and allergic dermatitis can happen any time simply by touching something you are sensitive to such as cleaning products that contain harsh chemicals and certain metals that set off an immune response to indicate you are injured or there is an intruder in your body that means to cause harm. Prostaglandins are sent in with a host of white blood cells to deal with the threat and start the healing process. Topicort Cream works well for skin rashes and bug bites, but should not be applied if there is infection present. If you suspect this is the case, your doctor will need to treat the infection first.

Before You Apply Topicort Cream

Ask your doctor if Topicort Cream can be harmful to your unborn or nursing baby if you are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breast feeding. Topicort Cream is absorbed into your skin cells so there is very little chance that it is absorbed into your bloodstream. You should explain other medical conditions or allergies you are dealing with to your doctor and list any OTC and Rx medicine you currently take or use, including herbal preparations and vitamin supplements. This will help your doctor decide if Topicort Cream is the right Rx for your situation.

Topicort Cream Precautions

Long term use of Topicort Cream or other corticosteroid meds for your skin is not recommended. The treated areas of skin can become thin or may develop stretch marks. It is safer to apply Topicort Cream where and as directed by your doctor and for the recommended amount of time only. You may be told not to cover or bandage the area after applying Topicort Cream as this can increase your risk of side effects. For those with eczema or psoriasis, Topicort Cream can be applied to reduce the redness and itching but should not be applied as a daily precaution to a flare-up.
