TOPICORT GEL (DESOXIMETASONE)

Description of Topicort Gel

Topicort Gel is prescribed as a potent topical corticosteroid for treating the symptoms of redness, swelling, itching, and inflammation caused by contact and seborrheic dermatitis, allergic dermatitis, rash from poison ivy or oak, eczema, and other skin conditions that do not involve open sores or lesions. Topicort Gel and other topical corticosteroids that are considered potent are only recommended for short treatment periods as they can cause serious side effects when applied to large areas and for longer periods. Once you have applied Topicort Gel for the time prescribed by your doctor, you may be able to continue maintenance treatment with a lower potency corticosteroid.

How The Active Ingredient Works

Topicort Gel contains Desoximetasone and it works to reduce your symptoms by suppressing the actions of your immune system when you sustain an injury from an allergic reaction, a rash after coming into contact with poison ivy or oak, or eczema which is believed to be caused by an impaired epidermal barrier.

Your immune response to any foreign substance or threat signals a chain of events that will overcome the intruder and repair damage by increasing the blood flow and flooding the affected area with fluid that contains plasma proteins. The result is inflammation, swelling, and redness. As Desoximetasone inhibits the production of the inflammatory chemicals, such as prostaglandins, and helps to narrow blood vessels so there is less inflammation, swelling, and redness.

Conditions That Benefit From Topicort Gel

Contact dermatitis is a common cause of rashes that occur when a part of your body has come into contact with an irritant. This could be a chemical, cleaning product, certain fabrics, and skin care products that contain alcohol. Your immune system identifies these as threats and prepares for battle by kicking off the immune response. Other allergens can be inhaled and cause sneezing, runny nose, and watery eyes and can be treated with different corticosteroid meds that target mast cells that area.

Before You Apply Topicort Gel

Tell your doctor about other medical conditions or allergies you have and whether you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or are breast feeding to be certain Topicort Gel is safe to use. Provide your doctor with a list of all Rx and OTC drugs you currently take or use, including herbal remedies and dietary or vitamin supplements so it can be determined if Topicort Gel is the best medication for you.

What to be Aware of When Using Topicort Gel

Do not apply Topicort Gel to any areas with open sores or lesions as it can slow the healing process. You should not cover the treated area as it can intensify the effects of Topicort Gel and can increase your risk of side effects unless your doctor has instructed you to do so. Keep Topicort Gel and all other medications out of children’s reach and never share your drugs with anyone.
