TRINTELLIX (VORTIOXETINE)

Trintellix Description

Trintellix (also known as Brintellix) contains Vortioxetine Hydrobromide, which is considered to be a new multimodal medication that is being prescribed to treat major depressive disorder (MDD). Trintellix is prescription strength medication that is taken orally as prescribed by your doctor. Your doctor may direct you to start taking this medication at a low dose and gradually increase your dose to help minimize the risk of side effects.

Controlling Brain Chemical Levels Can Reduce Symptoms of MDD

Described as a selective serotonin receptor inhibitor (SSRI), Trintellix works on numerous serotonin receptors to not only increase the serotonin levels but also increase noradrenaline and dopamine. Serotonin, noradrenaline, and dopamine are brain chemicals called neurotransmitters that can greatly affect your moods if they become unbalanced.

Serotonin is an inhibitory transmitter that does not stimulate your brain but is required in adequate amounts for pain control, sleep cycle, and low levels are associated with a decrease of your immune system functions. Low levels of noradrenaline are associated with decreased energy, sleep cycle problems and can lower your focus ability. Dopamine is responsible for motivation and insufficient amounts of this chemical can cause you to have difficulty remembering things or become distracted easily.

Conditions Treated by Trintellix

There is no one cause for depression; it may be a result of life events, hormonal changes, brain chemistry, physical illness, genetic predisposition or many other factors. Medications such as Trintellix may be prescribed alone or along with psychological counselling to improve emotional well-being.

Some people experience depression at one time during their life, while others may have recurring episodes of depression. Symptoms that affect how you feel, think and behave can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems that can interfere with your home life, work, school, and friendships.

Before Trintellix is Prescribed

Ask your doctor about the safety of taking Trintellix if you are pregnant, planning on becoming pregnant, or are breast feeding. Before you begin taking Trintellix, explain your medical history to your doctor, especially of: personal or family history of bipolar/manic-depressive disorder, personal or family history of suicide attempts, seizures, low sodium in the blood, intestinal ulcers/bleeding (peptic ulcer disease) or bleeding problems, personal or family history of glaucoma.

Trintellix Precautions

Trintellix may cause a serious condition called serotonin syndrome if taken together with some medicines. Make sure your doctor is aware of any other medications that you are taking; this includes prescription drugs, over the counter medications, vitamins and herbal supplements. Until you know how Vortioxetine Hydrobromide will affect you, avoid activities that may be considered unsafe.
