XYZAL (LEVOCETIRIZINE)

Xyzal Description

Xyzal is a prescription strength antihistamine or histamine antagonist that your doctor may recommend to relieve the symptoms of seasonal or year-round allergies as well as insect bites or stings. Seasonal allergies may be triggered by pollen, dust mites, soaps or scents and can cause a runny nose, watery/itchy eyes, and sneezing. Because very little of Xyzal or generic Levocetirizine enters your brain, there are minimal effects of drowsiness to interfere with your daily schedule. The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.

Clear Up the Symptoms of Allergies with Xyzal

When taken as directed Xyzal blocks histamine receptors so that when histamine is released from mast cells it cannot bind to its receptor where it will cause the allergic reaction of runny nose and watery eyes. Histamine causes this reaction as a way to “flush out” what it believes to be a threat to your body. Your nose runs, eyes water, and you begin to sneeze as a way to expel the intruder and minimize any damage your immune system thinks could happen.

Conditions Treated by Xyzal

Xyzal also treats hives which can be triggered by foods, medications, temperature changes, and stress, among other factors. Red, itchy welts can appear within minutes of being exposed to an allergen or coming into contact with stinging nettles or poison ivy. Stopping the itch is important as you are less likely to scratch and cause a break in your skin where bacteria can enter.

Avoidance is one step people can take to minimize their exposure to allergens, providing they know what they are sensitive to. Usually, through trial and error, you can eliminate the foods, scents, and chemicals that irritate your skin, but making the air pollen-free is impossible so you can talk to your doctor about Xyzal and take it when you know you’ll be spending time outside. Xyzal is also recommended for children that are bothered by allergy symptoms but there are age restrictions that your doctor can tell you about.

Before You Take Xyzal

Ask your doctor about any harmful effects on your unborn baby if you are pregnant or may become pregnant while taking Xyzal. This medication can pass into breast milk so you should avoid nursing your baby and bottle feed with formula instead. Discuss other medical conditions you have and list all OTC and Rx drugs you are taking, including herbal remedies and vitamin supplements so your doctor can determine if any of these could interfere with Xyzal or cause unintended side effects or alter its efficacy.

Xyzal Precautions

Until you know how you will react to Xyzal, avoid driving or performing any task that requires you to be alert. You should not drink alcohol while taking Xyzal due to a possible increase of side effects. You should not start or stop any medications while taking Xyzal without talking to your doctor first. Talk to your doctor before treating young children under 2 years of age with Xyzal, or ask about Xyzal Oral Solution and drops that are also available.
