Prolensa Ophthalmic Solution Description

Whether it’s the natural aging process or a medical condition, cataract surgery may be recommended by your doctor or ophthalmologist to help restore your sight so your world is not a blur. Prolensa Ophthalmic Solution is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) your doctor can prescribe to use pre- and post-operatively to help reduce swelling, inflammation and pain while you recover. Cataract surgery involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL).

Reduce Post-Op Inflammation

When Prolensa Ophthalmic Solution is instilled into your eye, the active ingredient, Bromfenac, will work to interfere with the cyclooxygenase enzymes, namely COX-1 and COX-2. This will obstruct the production of prostaglandins whose job is to cause inflammation as a response to injury. This is intended to heal the wound but inflammation causes swelling, pain, and more inflammation which can make your recovery period difficult. Prolensa Ophthalmic Solution does not block the prostaglandins entirely but because inflammation causes more inflammation, Bromfenac will limit its production to allow you some comfort following surgery.

Through normal wear and tear over the years, the lens of your eye(s) can cause your vision to become blurry and you can miss out on a lot with impaired vision. Your lens is mainly made of water and protein. The arrangement of the protein is the reason your lens is clear and allows light to pass through to your retina. As you age, this protein can clump together and a small part of your lens will cloud up. This clouding can progress until your vision is blurry. Regular eye exams are important for maintaining healthy eyes so you are not at risk for losing your sight. Other risk factors for cataracts include smoking and diabetes.

Before Prolensa Ophthalmic Solution is Prescribed

Ask your doctor about any risks to using Prolensa Ophthalmic Solution if you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or are breast feeding. Discuss other medical conditions or allergies with your doctor and list any OTC or Rx medications you currently take or use, including herbal remedies and dietary or vitamin supplements as this can determine if Prolensa Ophthalmic Solution is safe for you to use.

Prolensa Ophthalmic Solution Proper Use

If you wear contact lenses, remove them before instilling Prolensa Ophthalmic Solution and wait at least 10 minutes before inserting them again. You will not be able to drive or perform any task that requires you to see clearly immediately following the use of Prolensa Ophthalmic Solution. If you are also administering other eye drops, gel, or ointment, ask your doctor the best way to do this without compromising the effects of each of them.
