Renagel can be used to treat a condition called hypocalcemia, which develops when there is too little calcium in the blood. Hypocalcemia tends to manifest as a secondary condition related to kidney disease or kidney failure. This is because kidney disease causes your body to overproduce phosphorous and excess amounts of phosphorous decrease calcium levels. Decreasing blood phosphate levels can help keep your bones strong and prevent unsafe buildup of minerals in your body. Renagel works by holding onto phosphate from the diet so that it can pass out of your body.

Before You Take Renagel

Ask your doctor about potential risks with taking Renagel while you are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breast feeding.
