TRILAFON (KNOWN AS FENTAZIN INTERNATIONALLY)-PERPHENAZINE

Trilafon Description

Your doctor may recommend a prescription for Trilafon (known as Fentazin Internationally) to reduce the symptoms caused by schizophrenia or other psychotic disorders. Schizophrenia is believed to be a result of the overactivity of a brain chemical called dopamine that could be the reason for your strong emotions, unusual thinking, and a loss of interest in things that once made you happy.

Trilafon or generic Perphenazine is not a cure for schizophrenia, but it can allow you to enjoy your life and the people in it instead of preferring to spend most of your time isolated from others. The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.

Correct a Neurotransmitter Imbalance with Trilafon

Trilafon is a medium potency phenothiazine drug that blocks dopamine in your brain to lessen abnormal excitability and to decrease the release of hormones from your hypothalamus and pituitary gland. Dopamine is responsible for regulating your moods, behavior, sleep, and cognition. If your dopamine levels are unbalanced, your thoughts and actions could be disrupted. Trilafon helps to balance this neurotransmitter so that you are able to think more clearly and have thoughts that are not so jumbled. You have to be patient when taking Trilafon as it may be three to six weeks before you notice a change and the full effectiveness can take longer.

Conditions Treated by Trilafon

Neurotransmitters are essential for the communication between brain cells. Everyone has numerous brain chemicals that talk to each other and keep the body moving, breathing, talking, and so on. If something happens to interrupt any of these chemicals, things can go off kilter. The exact cause of schizophrenia is still a mystery, but luckily treatment is not.

Even though there is no cure, people receiving treatment with Trilafon or other antipsychotics are able to work, go to school, have a family, and socialize as long as they keep taking their medication. Trilafon has also been prescribed to control severe nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy or a result of anesthetic during surgery.

Before Trilafon is Prescribed

It may not be safe for you to take Trilafon if you have liver disease, a blood cell disorder, bone marrow depression, brain damage, or if you consume alcohol or medications that make you sleepy. Ask your doctor if Trilafon may be harmful if you are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breast feeding. To determine if Trilafon is safe for you, tell your doctor about any current prescription drugs or over the counter medications you take, including herbal remedies and dietary or vitamin supplements.

Trilafon Precautions and Proper Use

Until you know how Trilafon will affect you, do not drive, operate machinery, or perform any tasks that require your full attention. You should not consume alcohol while taking Trilafon as it can intensify side effects. Trilafon should not be taken to treat psychotic conditions related to dementia; it may increase the risk of death in older patients with dementia-related conditions.
