What is the Ventolin HFA inhaler?

Ventolin HFA inhaler or the generic alternative Albuterol HFA is prescribed to treat and prevent the symptoms of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). These symptoms include wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath. When inhaled as directed, the Ventolin inhaler releases Albuterol directly into the airways leading to your lungs and relaxes them. Once the airways have relaxed, your lungs are able to hold a better supply of air, and the wheezing and chest tightness subside. The Ventolin HFA Inhaler holds fast-acting medication that can be used to stop an asthma attack, but the effects are short-lived, so you will also require a long-acting maintenance medicine. (HFA stands for High Frequency Aerosol, which is the propulsion system for the medication.)

Generic Albuterol HFA is most commonly administered using an inhaler device. Inhaling the medicine allows it to act directly in the lungs where it is needed most. It also reduces the potential for side effects that occur in other parts of the body, since the amount absorbed into the blood via the lungs is lower than if you took the medicine orally.

Conditions treated by the Ventolin HFA inhaler

COPD is a collective name for chronic bronchitis and emphysema, both of which can be helped by the rapid effects of the Ventolin inhaler. Chronic bronchitis results from irritated bronchial tubes and eventual scarring after exposure to air pollution, dust and chemicals in the workplace, and/or smoking. As time passes, you produce mucus that thickens your bronchial tubes and impedes airflow.

Emphysema develops more slowly and is a direct result of years of smoking. The air sacs in your lungs become damaged and your lungs are unable to send sufficient oxygen to your bloodstream. This causes breathing difficulties; although Ventolin or generic Albuterol can help relieve shortness of breath, it is not a cure for COPD or asthma. Ventolin HFA inhalers can also be used shortly before exercising or exposure to allergens to open the airways and prevent wheezing.

The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.

What to know before using the Ventolin HFA inhaler

  • Tell your doctor about any conditions you have.
  • Provide a list of all over-the-counter medications and Rx medicine, including herbal remedies and vitamin supplements that you take, so your doctor can determine if there is a possibility of a negative reaction with a Ventolin HFA Inhaler.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
  • If you become pregnant while using the Ventolin HFA inhaler, call your doctor.
