VESICARE (SOLFENACIN)

What is VESIcare?

If you are bothered by urinary urgency, frequency, or incontinence, you should talk to your doctor about VESIcare or generic Solfenacin. VESIcare is a urinary antispasmodic medication that will help enable you to plan activities and social gatherings without mapping every restroom in the area for when you have to urinate. Treatment with VESIcare or generic Solfenacin will eliminate the need for incontinence pads and adult diapers and make it possible for you to sleep through the night without having to empty your bladder. The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.

VESIcare medication works by blocking muscarinic receptors in the surface of your muscle cells to stop the action of acetylcholine. This is a neurotransmitter that causes your detrusor muscle to contract in order to empty your bladder. By preventing acetylcholine from acting on the detrusor muscle, your bladder is able to hold more urine and you won’t experience the urgency to urinate. Women experiencing menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause are more likely to have over-active bladder problems than men.

About the Conditions Treated by VESIcare

An over-active bladder (OAB) could be a result of multiple sclerosis, dementia, a stroke, a spinal injury or other malfunctions of your nervous system. For many women, OAB is caused by weakened pelvic floor muscles as a result of giving birth. Without a strong pelvic floor, your bladder opening is not held shut very tightly and coughing, sneezing, or straining in any way can cause leakage, not to mention great embarrassment.

VESIcare does not cure an over-active bladder, but the number of trips to the restroom may be reduced when VESIcare medication is used along with a plan that includes losing weight, doing exercises to strengthen your pelvic floor, and consuming fewer fluids after supper.

What to Know Before You Buy VESIcare

Before you begin taking brand name or generic VESIcare, be sure to inform your doctor of any medical conditions or allergies you may have, as well as any medications you are taking, whether you are pregnant or breast-feeding, and any other significant facts about your health that will help the doctor determine the right VESIcare dosage for you.

VESIcare may reduce perspiration which can make you more prone to heat stroke and dehydration if you become over heated or active during hot weather. Use caution when driving or operating machinery while taking VESIcare as it may cause blurred vision or impaired thinking until your body is accustomed to the medication. You should not start taking any new medicine while taking VESIcare without consulting with your doctor first.
