Votrient Description

Votrient is prescribed to treat advanced kidney cancer and some types of soft tissue sarcoma (STS) that can form in areas where there are muscles, tendons, blood vessels and deep skin tissues to name a few. The active ingredient in Votrient is Pazopanib, a multi tyrosine kinase inhibitor that performs as a targeted therapy for effective results.

This form of targeted therapy is unlike some of the other cancer medications that just kill rapidly dividing cells, including our own cells that divide rapidly. By researching any and all possible differences between cancer cells and own normal cells, cancer drugs, including Votrient, have become more effective at reducing the number of cancer cells in our body. This also helps reduce side effects as many healthy cells remain untouched.

What to Expect from Votrient

When taken orally as directed, Votrient works by blocking certain proteins, such as tyrosine kinases that are found on the outside of cancer cells and other targets within the cells. Cancer cells rely on these proteins and other targets for producing new blood vessels for them so they can grow. As Votrient blocks this action, the number of cancer cells dwindles.

More About Kidney Cancer and STS

Kidney cancer appears to be more prevalent in men than women. Several risk factors for kidney or renal cancer appear to be smoking, being overweight or obese, genetics, and those with kidney failure who are undergoing dialysis. If kidney cancer is diagnosed early, surgery could be successful in removing the cancer.

Votrient has also been effective for treating certain types/subtypes of soft tissue sarcoma (STS). This type of cancer can be aggressive and targets the connective tissue whose primary function is to support, connect, and anchor various parts of your body. If detected and treated early, you may be able to eradicate STS for good. Your outlook can be very positive as long as your cancer has not spread to other tissues or organs.

Before You Take Votrient

Discuss other medical conditions and allergies with your doctor and list any over the counter medications or Rx drugs you take or use, including herbal remedies and dietary or vitamin supplements to determine if Votrient is safe for you to take. Certain medications, such as some antacids, may reduce the efficacy of Votrient.

Both men and women should use proper protection against a possible pregnancy occurring while taking Votrient as the risk potential for your unborn or nursing baby is not known. Until you know how Votrient will affect you, do not drive, operate machinery, or attempt any task considered dangerous if you are impaired in any way. Always store your medications out of children’s reach and never share them with anyone else.
